Adrian Toomes, also known by his alias Vulture, is a minor antagonist in Marvel's Spider-Man. A former electronics engineer, Vulture uses high-tech artificial wings to fly at very high speeds and has a mouth-covering on his outfit, which gives him a robotic voice. He is voiced by Dwight Schultz,[2] who reprises his role as the Vulture from the 2002 Spider-Man video game.

History

Early history

Adrian Toomes was born in Staten Island, New York around the year 1942.[1] He is a former electronics engineer who, at an unknown point, decided to turn to crime professionally as the Vulture. As the Vulture, Adrian would go on to become one of the first supervillains to encounter Spider-Man, who has mentioned that they have fought each other about two dozen times. Vulture was ultimately defeated by the webhead, and locked away in the Raft maximum-security prison.

Marvel's Spider-Man

In forming the Sinister Six, Doctor Octopus devises a plan to save Vulture's life – who now suffers from spinal cancer due to the power produced from his winged rig – and free him from the Raft, in exchange for helping Doc fix a personal vendetta against Norman Osborn.

The Vulture assists Electro briefly against Spider-Man when the criminals escape their cells, helping to lure him into a deadly confrontation with the Sinister Six. Later, when Spider-Man escapes an explosive trap set by Doctor Octopus, he rejoins forces with Electro as a back-up plan. Despite their efforts, Spider-Man takes them both down, and Vulture is arrested at gunpoint.

Concept art

From what can be discerned, Adrian's appearance is typical of someone in their advanced years: bald and wrinkled skin. He is always seen wearing his winged suit, which is primarily black and light green with silver trim. The wings on the suit are retractable, and are wider than a man's height when fully extended.

Vulture is a gifted mechanical engineer, having invented his original flight suit. With Doctor Octopus's aid, he builds a new, high-tech winged suit of his own design. With it, he has the ability to fly at speeds of up to 95 miles per hour, launch energized knife-like projectiles from his wingtips, and enhanced strength. Due to his advanced age, however, Vulture has low stamina; during his fight with Spider-Man, he has to stop momentarily to catch his breath.

Original appearance

Vulture was one of the original members of the Sinister Six. His first appearance was in Amazing Spider-Man #2 (May 1963).
