The One That Got Away is the thirty-third main mission in Marvel's Spider-Man. Yuriko Watanabe calls Spider-Man to give him a lead on Martin Li's location. Meanwhile, Mary Jane Watson is at Grand Central Station, and encounters Martin Li as he attempts to release Devil's Breath.

Story[]

Yuri calls Spider-Man after Silver Sable recovers Morgan Michaels, letting him know they have located a vehicle that matches that of the one Martin Li took after stealing the Devil's Breath with his Inner Demons.

As Spider-Man heads there, Dr. Michaels, using one of Sable's radios, calls Spider-Man to inform him that transit hubs are the most likely release for Devil's Breath, and how he regrets ignoring the risks Devil's Breath posed while he worked on it. When Spider-Man arrives at Yuri's location, he finds the car empty. He also cannot reach Mary Jane Watson to warn her about the Devil's Breath.

Meanwhile, Mary Jane is at Grand Central Station, where several advertisements for Oscorp technology are present. As she views an advertisement for the Gaia Microbe Dispersal Device, Martin Li arrives behind her, and he and his Demons take control of the station. Li calls Norman Osborn to order him to come to Grand Central Terminal alone in thirty minutes or he will kill more people.

Mary Jane is forced into the center with the others, but manages to reach Spider-Man for help. Spider-Man deduces that Li's plan is to force Osborn to release Devil's Breath himself, making him responsible. Spider-Man enters, but drones patrolling make him unable to act.

When Mary Jane works with him in order to steal the control tablet for the drones, she is interrupted when one of the prisoners decides to attack the Demons. With no other recourse, she reveals herself as a reporter, insisting she can assure Osborn arrives on time so long as they do not kill the prisoner. When they agree, she leads one of the them to another part of the building, where Spider-Man attacks and webs him up.

After Mary Jane disables the drones using the tablet, Spider-Man and Mary Jane work together. They have a difference of opinion on their partnership, where Spider-Man urges her to leave and promises to return for Devil's Breath later, but Mary Jane refuses due to the people in danger. With Spider-Man's help, Mary Jane is able to get back to the bomb to diffuse it.

Once diffused, Spider-Man takes out more of the Demons stealthily. When enough have been disabled, Spider-Man gives the all-clear for the hostages to flee, and Mary Jane leads them to safety. Martin Li ends up being in one of the subway cars below, and Spider-Man follows him and battles him in a subway car. Spider-Man apprehends Li and stops the runaway subway train, with Li sent to the Raft. Afterward, awkward texts with Mary Jane, who is not yet ready to talk on the phone, suggest she might be considering their relationship over, though she suggests she may call him the next day. Yuri calls Spider-Man to congratulate him as Li is sent to the Raft while Devil's Breath is secured by Sable.

Walkthrough[]

Upon reaching the mission location, players assume the perspective of Mary Jane, entering Grand Central Station. They are free to roam about examining the various advertisements for Oscorp technology, but the one that triggers the next part is the Gaia Microbe Dispersal Device.

After a cutscene, as Mary Jane, players must move the camera around the room to point out points of danger for Spider-Man. When asked to find an entry point for him, the vent is in the southwest corner, right behind Mary Jane's right shoulder.

Spider-Man arrives, but players still assume Mary Jane's role, watching as he sneaks his way inside. After he causes a distraction, run for the control tablet to commence a brief cutscene, and after this, follow the waypoint to another part of the room so Spider-Man can web up the Demon led astray. After the next cutscene, a stealth segment commences.

The stealth segment is similar to usual Mary Jane segments with the exception that players can call Spider-Man to help eliminate some guards. Using lures, players can throw lures to separate Demons apart so that Spider-Man can be called to web and eliminate them. Not all Demons have to be eliminated, and Mary Jane simply needs to approach the group near the Devil's Breath bomb then cause a distraction.

After reaching the bomb, a cutscene commences, following which players have to diffuse it. This is done by tracing the wires to their source on the device, rotating to follow them, then pulling the wires: the two blue wires first, the yellow next, and the red wire last.

Players then assume the role of Spider-Man, waiting above. This is another stealth mission, tasking players with taking high points and then stringing up the Inner Demons from above. A cutscene commences after this, at which point an all-out battle commences.

Martin Li ends up being in one of the subway cars below, and players quickly board in order to fight him. As it is a subway car, it is a very close-quarters combat fight, and players will find they have nowhere to swing off to. Webbing Li works, and players must be very quick to use their dodge when their Spider-Sense goes off. The fight is more difficult in the second car, as players need to continually dodge side to side and at a distance to avoid his amped-up blasts. Players will also begin to have to jump onto the ceiling. Spider-Man will announce when the best time to strike is, so players should hold off until they hear the message.

After successfully defeating Li, players will have to stop the runaway subway car by paying attention to the screen prompts. A cutscene then ends the mission, and player shave time to roam the city as Spider-Man and complete citywide activities. When Otto Octavius calls, the mission "Breakthrough" is available.

Behind the scenes[]

Spider-Man's initial attempt to stop the subway train at the end of the boss battle is a direct nod to a similar scene in the 2004 movie Spider-Man 2, where Spider-Man uses his webbing to form an improvised slingshot to prevent a subway train from crashing. In the game, however, Spider-Man's attempt to do the same thing fails as the webs snap, with Spider-Man himself saying, "That totally worked last time!"
