Silver Sable International, or simply Sable International, is an organization in Marvel's Spider-Man series and in the background of its downloadable content campaign, The City That Never Sleeps. It is a private military corporation owned and operated by Silver Sable. They are hired by Mayor Norman Osborn Norman Osborn under the pretense of restoring order to New York City after the Inner Demons attack, but are later ordered to kill Spider-Man on sight. Using technologically advanced weaponry, Sable International are a considerable threat, but are notorious for violating civil liberties.

Sable International appear as both allies and an antagonistic force at various points in Marvel's Spider-Man. A few crimes involve Sable as both allies and enemies, and later, Sable Outposts can be completed.

History[]

Early history[]

Sable International was founded by Silver Sable's grandfather, a member of the Eastern European country of Symkaria's royal family. It was founded after World War II, when the country's primary resource was trained, hardened soldiers. When Silver Sable inherited the corporation, she brought them into the twenty-first century in terms of tactics and technology, and became its finest soldier and unquestioned leader.[1]

At some point during Silver Sable's early adulthood, Symkaria was taken over by a dictator, who overthrew Sable's royal family and plunged the country into a bloody civil war. Sable International therefore took jobs to raise money and create technology and weapons to help the rebels fight and win the war. One such job Sable International to David Obademi's village, and after he and the school children he taught were rescued by Sable, he joined the organization himself.[2]

At some point, Sable International partnered with Oscorp in developing the Project Olympus technology.[citation needed]

Marvel's Spider-Man[]

After the Inner Demons' terrorist assault in City Hall, Mayor Osborn hired Sable International to provide security, filling in for a short stagged police department after many officers were arrested for being on Wilson Fisk's payroll.[1] In "Dual Purpose", in their first interaction with Spider-Man, who they labeled "SM one", they captured him, until captain Yuriko Watanabe ordered them to stand down.[3] As the organization established itself in the city, J. Jonah Jameson was initially supportive of them, telling New Yorkers they worked for New Yorkers and were there to keep the city safe.[4]

Sable International fought against the demons throughout the city while also protecting Mayor Osborn's personal interests. They were hired to protect Dr. Morgan Michaels and Oscorp CFO Charles Standish, who were targets by the Demons for their roles in Devil's Breath. In "Uninvited", Mary Jane Watson sneaked into a Sable compound In "Collision Course", they tried to protect Dr. Michaels and prevent the Demons from taking his Devil's Breath sample, although they were unsuccessful; when Spider-Man came in for help, Sable ordered him to leave and allow her men to handle it.[5] Around this time, the Daily Bugle, who had initially covered Sable International positively, accused Sable of brutality and soured in its coverage.[6]

After Devil's Breath was released and prisoners at the Raft and Ryker's Island escaped, Sable International was ordered by Mayor Osborn to target Spider-Man as a fugitive.[7] They also set up a number of outposts around the city that violated civil liberties, locking them up without due process, keeping those they could not make a case over while turning real criminals over to the police. Sable performed asset seizures without warrants on civilians (accusing those with nice cars or jewelery of being criminals), detained protesters, and forced residents out of a building to use as a base then detained those who refused. After Spider-Man stopped these outposts and captain Yuriko Watanabe convinced the mayor it would lead to bad polling, they desisted.[8] Around this time, J. Jonah Jameson heavily criticized Sable agents, describing them as an "occupying army"[9] and accusing them of hiding something when they refused to allow him to inspect their bases.[10]

In "The Heart of the Matter", after Spider-Man fought with Sable International outside the Devil's Breath lab, Sable threatened to kill him until Spider-Man convinced her to work with him against Martin Li. Sable left New York after they worked together against the Demons, questioning her work, but her men remained behind.[11][a]

The City That Never Sleeps[]

Hammerhead managed to steal a significant supply of Sable International's weaponry, which he saved up for the upcoming Maggia gang war. The equipments which Hammerhead's Maggia gang stole were from the stolen blueprints known as Project Olympus, a defunct project from a past collaboration between Sable and Oscorp.

Silver Sable herself returned to New York to retrieve her equipment from Hammerhead's hands, and aid Symkaria in a battle against its dictatorship. Black Cat worked undercover to locate Hammerhead's Project Olympus weapons, giving the information to Spider-Man.[13] Using this, Spider-Man helped a resigned Sable agent, David Obademi, retrieve humanitarian supplies located in various Olympus Hideouts that he wished to deliver to the Symkarian Embassy.[2]

Miles Morales[]

One of the Sable teams led by Silver Sable, the Wild Pack, is mentioned during Peter Parker and Mary Jane's trip at Symkaria for Daily Bugle. Sable's Wild Pack is enlisted to handle the Civil War crisis in their country.[citation needed]

Characteristics[]

Sable International is a Symkaria-based mercenary force. Its mercenaries are easily distinguished by their white clothing with sleek black armor plating, helmets, and boots. They use highly advanced equipment, including jetpacks, energy shields, and high-tech rifles. Their bases and outposts feature lookout towers, which can be pulled down, and waist-high barriers that form tall holographic screens. The majority of Sable personnel are mercenaries more concerned with fulfilling their contract than public image, and are not afraid to use heavy (if not outright excessive) force, or to violate civil liberties.[8]

Gameplay[]

Enemies[]

Sable agents are among the most resilient enemies in Manhattan, featuring riflemen, riot shields, electrified batons, snipers, and jetpack units that can fly above skyscrapers. They use large white trucks to move around, which often sport an automated turret mounted on top which acts as fire support, although it can be easily yanked off and thrown at a nearby enemy. Both the turrets and the jetpack agents can fire bolas to restrain Spider-Man, and grenades thrown by other agents will temporarily disable his gadgets. Agents will also sometimes wear high-tech body armor immune to web-based attacks, up until they have taken too much damage individually.

Outposts[]

Following the mission "Out of the Frying Pan...", Silver Sable has Sable International set up outposts around the city to find Mister Negative and Doctor Octopus. However, Yuri Watanabe warns Spider-Man that they are rounding people up indiscriminately, holding them captive in these bases. Spider-Man can opt to take the outposts down and rescue the innocent civilians, to win Base Tokens. Each outpost will have several waves of Sable International agents to defeat, as well as different sets of bonus objectives to complete for extra Base Tokens. The overall goal is to clear the area of enemies.

There are a total of four "Sable Outposts" around the city.
