Rio Morales is a supporting character in Marvel's Spider-Man. She is the wife of police officer Jefferson Davis and the mother of Miles Morales. Rio is voiced by Jacqueline Pinol.[2]

History

Early history

Rio was born and raised in East Harlem, New York City around the year 1977.[1] Sometime before the birth of her son Miles, she moved to Brooklyn with her then husband Jefferson, where she continued teaching.

Marvel's Spider-Man

Rio is at the awards ceremony for her husband, Jefferson, when the Inner Demons arrive and set off explosions. Not knowing the fate of her husband, she rushes into the debris, only to become pinned. She is rescued by her son, Miles, and is next seen at the funeral for her husband.

Sometime after the funeral, Rio is contacted by May Parker, who is advised by her nephew Peter to have Miles volunteer at F.E.A.S.T. to help him process his grief. Supportive of the idea, Rio convinces Miles to volunteer (the alternative being more therapy).

Rio later aids in the distribution of the Devil's Breath antiserum, and is last seen at May's funeral.

Miles Morales

Sometime within the following year and a half, Rio moved back to East Harlem with Miles, settling in her mother's former apartment. During that time, Rio began campaigning for a City Council seat against Roxxon.

Rio's campaign rally is interrupted by an attack from the Underground. In the panic, Rio falls and injures her arm, and is brought to the hospital by Ganke.

Rio later accidentally discovers her son's secret identity as Spider-Man when Miles shows up wounded after a confrontation against the Tinkerer, whom Miles reveals to her that Tinkerer is actually Phin, out for revenge towards Roxxon for what they did to her brother, Rick. Rio initially reacts with worry, but later learns to accept her son's role on protecting Harlem against Roxxon and Underground, just like Jeff before him.

She and Ganke later organizes an emergency evacuation of Harlem when the NuForm reactor at the Roxxon Plaza becomes instable, threatening to blow up the entire neighborhood, and is also present to help Miles escape from public view after he drained the reactor, at cost of Phin's sacrificial redemption.

Four weeks later, thanks to Aaron's testimony against Roxxon that allows authority to arrest Simon Krieger for his crimes, Rio is elected for city council. She even gets interviewed by J. Jonah Jameson, trying unsuccessfully to convince him that Spider-Man is not an enemy, which leads to Jameson abruptly ending the interview.

Rio is a middle-aged woman of Puerto Rican origin. She is a kind and caring woman with a love of science which she passed onto Miles. Even after her husband's death, she still took the time to make others feel better, such as trying to help Miles through the loss of his father despite grieving. She is also brave as well, demonstrated by how she is willing to run back into the wreckage to find her husband during the Demon attack at City Hall. She is also shown to be a very fierce woman, standing up against Roxxon during her election rally on Harlem.

Original appearance

Rio Morales first appeared in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man vol. 2 #1 (November 2011).
