There's been a Spider-Man protecting New York since I was a kid, but to have one here, who cares about me, my home... it means everything.
Hailey Cooper to Spider-Man, We've Got a Lead!
Hailey Cooper is an original supporting character in the Marvel's Spider-Man series, first appearing in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. As of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, she becomes Miles Morales' girlfriend. In contrast to Mary Jane Watson and pre-Spider-Man Miles Morales, Hailey only has one mission that involves graffiti art.
History[]
Hailey is a street artist who lives near Miles Morales at East Harlem. She is Deaf, with a capital D indicating her connection with Deaf culture and community, and uses American Sign Language to communicate. Miles communicates to her in ASL while fulfilling his Spider-Man duties.
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales[]
She first appears making a graffiti of original Spider-Man in during "Hold Onto Your Web-Shooters". Hailey later presents at a campaign rally led by Miles' mother, Rio in front of Roxxon Plaza before its main enemy, Underground begin their assault to steal Nuform from the company to expose its corruption in their own way.
After Miles stops robbers from stealing from local business through the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man App, Ganke contacts Miles during "We've Got a Lead!" mission, informing him that Hailey has a lead on the robbers. Miles remembers their encounter at his mother's rally and goes to meet Hailey in Harlem's CJ Walker Park. Hailey informed Miles that she had tracked the criminals after they tried to mess with the King's Day parade, and they were located at a shopping center in the upper east side. Miles went to the center and discovered Wilson Fisk was behind these attacks. Ganke informs Miles that the park where he met Hailey is currently under attack and he swings back. Hailey had already evacuated the citizens and hid in a nearby deli by the time Miles arrived at the park. After Miles defeated the criminals in the park, Hailey approached him to thank him for saving her home. She gifted him her scarf as a sign of thanks.
At the end of the game, Hailey discovers that Miles is in fact the new Spider-Man and with everyone else she agrees to keep his secret. To that end, she shields him from the reporters and police. Much later, Miles discovers that Hailey has updated the mural by including a picture of him next to the other Spider-Man. He thanks her and continues on his way.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]
Hailey now attends Brooklyn Visions Academy and is classmates with both Miles and Ganke Lee, and the three are seen frequently hanging out together. At some point, she and Ganke also learns Peter's true identity as the original Spider-Man. They are students in Peter Parker’s class on his first day teaching, until an attack from the Sandman forces him and Miles to leave to stop him. On return, the trio also get to witness as Peter is fired for abandoning the class in dismay, as Miles already warned Peter how restrictive the trio's school system is.
Outside of class, Hailey has also started the Cooper Art Coalition for aspiring street artists in Brooklyn, which catches the attention of podcast host Danika Hart. She is also able to communicate with Miles via text-to-speech phone calls, allowing her to provide him with intel regarding recent incidents at Brooklyn Visions.
Miles tries to pursue a relationship with Hailey, but is unable to due to his responsibilities as Spider-Man, which become more stressful following the arrival of Kraven the Hunter. Peter also becomes more distant and pays less attention to Miles after his childhood friend Harry Osborn suddenly returns. This frustrates Miles, who tries using it as an opportunity to spend more time with Hailey. This proves more difficult after Kraven's Hunters kidnap Martin Li from prison, the Lizard reappears, and Peter acquires a new suit that drastically changes his personality.
Sometime later, Venom has risen to power and twists Harry's goal of "healing the world" by "curing" everyone, creating multiple nests across the city that continuously transform the citizens of New York City into symbiotes with abilities similar to his own. When Miles goes to destroy one of these nests, he is temporarily transported into the symbiote hivemind, where he sees a vision of Hailey being attacked. After breaking free, he rushes to where he saw her in the vision and saves her from a lone symbiote. Amazed after seeing that she is sheltering civilians from the symbiote invasion, Miles finally musters the courage to ask Hailey out on a date, which she accepts.
After Venom is defeated and the city returns to normal, Hailey arrives at Miles and Rio's apartment for their date. Miles shows her his essay for his college application, during which she notices his suit nearby, sporting the same scarf she gave him the year before. She wraps the scarf around his neck, and the two share a kiss. A knock at the door startles Miles, which amuses Hailey to the point of making her laugh. Both Hailey and Miles are introduced by Rio to her new boyfriend, Albert Moon and his daughter Cindy.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Hailey is a teenage, African-American girl with brown eyes and curly brown hair, which she keeps mostly back with a headband (or earmuffs during the winter, as seen in Miles Morales). She wears a necklace that reads "Love", and wears hearing aids on both ears.
Personality[]
Hailey is shown to be extremely passionate about street art, herself becoming a locally recognized street artist in both Harlem and Brooklyn. This passion sees her getting to know other aspiring street artists, regardless of her deafness, which leads to the creation of the Cooper Art Coalition. She is also extremely patient, especially towards Miles, who in contrast is often frustrated at his inability to spend time with her.
Her primary means of communication is American Sign Language. Whenever she meets people that don't sign, she uses her cell phone's texting app to communicate. She also uses text-to-speech when communicating with hearing people, as she does with Miles.
Abilities[]
Players control Hailey during the mission "Graffiti Trouble". Her abilities are limited to walking, running, climbing, interacting with certain objects in the environment, and using her spray can. The mission is unique in that the sound is almost completely muted to somewhat mimic the experience of being fully deaf, even though Hailey is not fully deaf and wears hearing aids so has some sound perception. Hailey's thoughts and reactions are conveyed via on-screen stickers resembling emojis, and haptic feedback from the controller is more prominent to immerse players as she explores the environment.
